5 Things Every Dancer Should Carry to Class

Have you ever reached dance class, started warming up, and suddenly realised you forgot something important?

Whether you’re a beginner taking your first class or a regular dancer who spends hours training, carrying the right things can make your class much more comfortable and productive. You don’t need to fill your entire bag with unnecessary stuff—just a few essentials can make a big difference.

Here are 5 things every dancer should carry to class:

1. A Water Bottle 💧

This might sound obvious, but it’s one of the most important things in your dance bag.

Dance involves constant movement, and you can lose a lot of fluid through sweating, especially during intense choreography, cardio or long training sessions. Keeping a water bottle with you makes it easier to stay hydrated throughout class.

Instead of waiting until you feel extremely thirsty, take small sips during breaks.

Pro tip: Carry a reusable bottle so you always have water available and avoid depending on packaged bottles.

2. A Small Towel

After a few rounds of choreography, especially during energetic styles, you’re going to sweat—and that’s completely normal!

A small hand towel can help you quickly wipe your face, neck and hands between exercises without interrupting your training.

It’s also useful when you’re working on movements that require grip or when your hands become sweaty.

A towel takes almost no space in your bag, so there’s really no reason to leave it behind.

3. Comfortable Dancewear & Extra Clothing

Your outfit can affect how freely you move.

Wear clothes that allow your body to stretch, groove, jump and move without constantly needing adjustment. Depending on the dance style, comfortable T-shirts, joggers, leggings, shorts or other flexible clothing can work well.

But here’s something many dancers forget: carry an extra T-shirt.

If you have a long training session or multiple classes, changing into a fresh shirt afterwards can make you feel much more comfortable.

And if you travel to and from class in the same outfit, an extra layer can also be useful depending on the weather.

4. The Right Footwear

Different dance styles require different types of footwear.

Sneakers may work well for commercial, hip-hop or certain fitness-based classes, while other styles may require specific dance shoes—or even bare feet.

Whatever your class requires, make sure your footwear is comfortable, fits properly and is appropriate for the floor.

Avoid wearing completely new shoes for an important class or performance. Give yourself some time to get comfortable with them first.

And if your studio requires a separate pair of indoor shoes, keep them in your dance bag so you don’t forget them.

5. Your Phone—But Use It Wisely 📱

Yes, your phone can actually be useful in dance class.

You may need it to record choreography for practice, check a reference video, play music during independent training or note down combinations and corrections.

But there’s one rule: don’t let your phone become a distraction.

There’s a big difference between using your phone to record your choreography and spending ten minutes scrolling through Instagram between takes.

Use it as a dance tool, not a distraction.

Bonus: A Few Small Things Worth Carrying

Depending on your class and personal needs, you can also keep a few small essentials in your bag:

  • Hair ties or clips

  • Deodorant

  • Hand sanitizer

  • A small snack

  • Band-aids

  • Notebook and pen for choreography note

  • You don’t need everything every day. Pack according to your training schedule.

What About Snacks?

If you have a long training day, keeping a simple snack with you can be helpful.

Something easy to carry—such as a banana, sandwich, dry fruits or another snack you normally eat—can be useful when you need something between classes.

The goal isn’t to carry a full kitchen in your dance bag. Just keep something practical that works for you.

Your Dance Bag Should Make Training Easier

Being prepared for class doesn’t mean carrying a huge bag filled with everything imaginable.

The idea is simple: carry what helps you train better.

A water bottle keeps you hydrated.

A towel keeps you comfortable.

Proper clothing lets you move freely.

The right footwear supports your training.

And your phone can help you remember and practice choreography.

Small things can make a surprisingly big difference when you’re training consistently.
